Natural Gas and the World’s Largest Gas Fields

Natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas that occurs naturally and is a major element of the world’s energy system. It is widely used in the generation of electricity, in fueling industrial processes, in supplying heat, and for cooking, as well as for a number of other residential and commercial uses. A great many countries rely on natural gas to meet their energy needs in order to satisfy the demands of industry, business, and households.

There are considerable natural gas resources in the world, some of the largest proven reserves being located in the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia, and other major producing areas. Natural gas is also present in North America, South America, Africa, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the latest Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy, global natural gas production reached approximately 4,124 billion cubic metres in 2024, an increase of 1.2% from the previous year. The United States, Russia, Iran, and China were the four largest natural gas producers, together accounting for about 53% of global production.

World’s Largest Natural Gas Field

The South Pars/North Field is the biggest natural gas field in the world and is one large offshore gas reservoir that stretches across the maritime frontier between Iran and Qatar; Iran names its part South Pars, and Qatar calls its part the North Field.

The area covered is enormous and amounts to about 9,700 square kilometres, with total reserves of approximately 51 trillion cubic metres of natural gas, as stated by Guinness World Records.

Russia hosts some of the largest gas fields in the world, such as Urengoy and Yamburg. These massive fields have been of great significance for Russia’s long-term production and exports of natural gas.

Reserve estimates vary depending on the definition used, source, and whether figures represent original gas in place, recoverable resources, or proved reserves. Therefore, figures from different sources should not always be compared directly.

Natural gas remains an important part of the global energy mix. In 2024, global gas demand increased by 2.5%, or about 101 bcm, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for roughly half of the growth.

The importance of natural gas also extends beyond domestic energy use. Pipeline networks and liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure allow major producers to supply international markets. The United States was the world’s largest LNG exporter in 2024, with exports of about 115 bcm.
