List of Waterfalls to Visit Near Bengaluru

Karnataka doesn’t do things by halves when it comes to natural attractions. The Western Ghats cut straight through the state, and this stretch of mountains is loaded with hill stations, thick forest, and hundreds of waterfalls that pour off the slopes once the monsoon kicks in. Some are famous enough to appear on postcards; others stay hidden unless you know a local who’s willing to point the way.

Ask any Bengalorean how they spend a long weekend, and waterfalls come up more often than you’d expect. Bengaluru sits in the southern half of Karnataka, close enough to several waterfall clusters that a short drive or at most a few hours on the road puts you right in front of water crashing down through coffee estates and forests. Most of these cascades sit around Coorg (Kodagu), Chikmagalur, and the Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts, and each region has its own personality: Coorg leans misty and coffee-scented, Chikmagalur trades in dramatic drops, and the two Kannada districts hide trekking-only falls that barely see tourist crowds.

Best Time to Visit

  • June to September (monsoon): Waterfalls hit peak flow dramatically, but trails get slippery and some routes close for safety.
  • October to November: Water levels drop a bit, but trekking conditions are far more comfortable.
  • December to February: Good for a scenic day trip, though several falls thin out considerably.
  • March to May: Skip it if the waterfall itself is the goal; most reduce to a trickle.

Before You Go

  1. Check whether the waterfall requires forest department permission; several in Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada do.
  2. Carry rain gear and a change of clothes between June and September.
  3. Avoid swimming near the base during heavy flow; currents are stronger than they look.
  4. Hire a local guide for trek-only falls like Dondole or Unchalli, as trails aren’t always marked.
  5. Start early. Most of these spots are 3–5 hours from Bengaluru, and forest roads aren’t great after dark.
