Defense training institutes in India turn teenagers and graduates into officers, staff planners, and military doctors, yet the rules for getting in keep shifting. Women now graduate from the National Defense Academy; the Indian Military Academy graduated its first women cadets in June 2026, and several age bands have shifted since this page was first published in 2013. Below you will find every major institute, its location, its entry route, and the age limit that applies today. I also flag what changed, what still awaits confirmation, and one academy whose closure was approved years ago but still seems to be running.

What Changed in the Rules
Rules matter more than building names here. A cadet who misses an age cut-off by one day cannot appeal, so it pays to know what moved.
Women are now part of almost every pipeline
Women were first allowed to sit the NDA exam after a 2021 Supreme Court order, and the first group joined the 148th course in 2022. The payoff arrived in 2026. Nine women cadets passed out of the Indian Military Academy on 13 June 2026 in a parade reviewed by the President, and the Air Force Academy commissioned 37 women out of 231 flight cadets on 13 June 2026, including the first NDA women. The CDS route still looks different. IMA, INA and AFA entries through CDS remain open to unmarried men only, while the Officers Training Academy takes women directly.
Age limits
The old table on this page had gaps, and two of its figures no longer match the recent CDS notices.
| Academy | Current (CDS notices) |
|---|---|
| IMA | 19 to 24 |
| Indian Naval Academy | 19 to 24 |
| Air Force Academy | 20 to 24 (CPL holders up to 26) |
| OTA | 19 to 25, exact birth dates set per notification |
One caution. A few coaching sites still list the older INA and AFA bands, so online figures don’t match. The UPSC website notification is the only binding source, and I would treat every number here as subject to it.
No relaxation, no attempt cap
UPSC gives no age relaxation to SC, ST or OBC candidates in the CDS or NDA. Attempts are unlimited as long as you stay inside the age window. For OTA women, the eligibility also covers widows and divorcees without children.
Dates to watch
According to the UPSC calendar, the NDA & NA (I) 2027 and CDS (I) 2027 notifications are due on 2 December 2026, applications close on 22 December 2026, and the written exam is on 11 April 2027. UPSC calls calendar dates tentative, so check again in December.
Institute Profiles
Each of the defence training institutes in India runs a different kind of course, so I have grouped them by what they do.
National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla
The NDA trains cadets for all three services before they move on to their own academies. The entry is right after Class 12, and the age band is 16.5 to 19.5 years. According to a PIB note from March 2026, women cadets graduated in two batches (17 in May 2025 and 15 in November 2025). The Navy and Air Force wings are expected to ask for physics and maths in Class 12.
Indian Military Academy, Dehradun
Founded in 1932, the IMA produces Army officers. The 158th Regular Course and 141st Technical Graduate Course passed out on 13 June 2026, and 515 cadets crossed the Antim Pag, 34 of them from friendly foreign countries. Any graduate can apply through CDS between the ages of 19 and 24, provided he is unmarried.
Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala
This academy was missing from the old table by oversight. Ezhimala trains officers for the Navy and Coast Guard, and CDS applicants need an engineering degree. The Spring Term 2026 parade on 28 May saw 311 trainees pass out, including six from Seychelles, Tanzania, and Vietnam.
Air Force Academy, Dundigal
Also absent from the old list. The 217 Course graduated on 13 June 2026 with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as reviewing officer. CDS candidates need a degree with physics and math in 10+2, or an engineering degree, and the band is 20 to 24 years. Commercial pilot license holders get two extra years.
Officers Training Academy, Chennai
The OTA commissions short service officers, and it is the only CDS door open to women. Recent notices counted roughly 170 seats for men and about 17 for women, though these numbers shift each cycle. Training lasts about a year.
Officers Training Academy, Gaya
Here the story gets murky. The Defense Ministry cleared a proposal to disband the Gaya academy in December 2019, with cadets expected to move to the IMA. Yet a June 2026 report describes OTA Gaya cadets visiting the Sikh Regimental Centre at Ramgarh, which suggests the academy still trains cadets. I couldn’t find a clear order closing it, so I kept it on the list with a flag.
National Defence College, New Delhi
Inaugurated in 1960, the NDC prepares senior officers and civil servants for national strategy. The 66th Course is running, and its members called on the President on 13 October 2026. The course lasts about 47 weeks.
Defence Services Staff College, Wellington
DSSC took in its 82nd Staff Course on 1 June 2026, with more than 500 officers, including 49 from friendly foreign countries. It targets mid-career officers heading for staff and command jobs. Five seats are reserved for Group A civil servants.
Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun
The RIMC, established in 1922, admits boys and girls into Class VIII. The age window is 11.5 to 13 years on the first day of the term. Entrance tests now run twice a year (June and December), with papers in maths, general knowledge and English, followed by an interview and a medical. The old page misspelled the name, so I corrected it throughout.
Screenshot to add here: the RIMC admissions notice at rimc.edu.in, showing the age and exam date lines. Add the capture date in the caption.
Armed Forces Medical College, Pune
The AFMC takes students for MBBS through NEET UG, followed by a separate application, screening, interview and medical test. Reports put the intake at roughly 145 to 150 seats. Graduates carry a service liability, which 2026 coverage describes as seven years. Read the AFMC site before you apply, because the brochure sets the final rules.
FAQ
