Wikipedia is the multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project founded by Jimmy Wales in May 2001. Wikipedia, part of the Wikimedia Foundation, is popular around the world and ranked sixth in the Alexa ranking, with over 570 million unique visitors per month. Wikimedia has offices in the main cities in some countries. The main office is located in San Francisco, California, United States, and has branches all around the world.
Although the Wikimedia Foundation has only a few permanent offices, most of its staff work remotely across dozens of countries. The foundation also supports local Wikimedia chapters, user groups, and thematic organizations in more than 100 countries, but these are independent affiliates rather than Wikimedia Foundation offices.
